Strategy for Anthropology
Strategy for Anthropology
Why Anthropology
My interest
in the subject was the most important reason for selecting Anthropology as an
optional.I would request all the aspirants to choose optional based on interest
as at the end of the day ,its “YOU” who has to sit with those books for long
hours and in course of time have to start “living “ that optional as
well.Availability of study materials and a background in biology also helped me
in choosing Anthropology as my second optional.
The comprehensive list of Anthropology books that I followed was
Topics
Books
Physical Anthropology P.Nath/B.M Das
Social Anthropology Ember and
Ember
Makhan Jha
N.K Vaid
D.N Majumdar & T.N Madan
Indian Anthropology Nadeem
Hasnain
V.S Sahay and Pradeep K SIngh
Anthropological
thought Upadhyay and
Gaya Pandey
Extensive use of the internet for keeping myself updated about any new
development in the field of anthropology.
I also took study
materials from Brilliant Tutorials(in my first attempt) and Vaid IAS
academy,Delhi for this attempt. These materials helped me to systematise my
study according to the syllabus.
Answer
writing in Anthropology- For paper 1 ,I ensured that my concepts were
very clear and i was able to express and substantiate the theories with
adequate presentations and eg's ...Use of diagrams wherever feasible also
helped me.
For Paper 2-I tried to
substantiate many answers of mine with current developments and since i belong
to Jharkhand ,i have seen many of the questions asked as "LIVE examples so could add-on there as well..
I tried to re-read the textbooks as i wanted to make my concepts clear and over a period of time i started enjoying the subject very much. There were several questions this year like the one on impact of industrialization on tribals or Impact of Hindu religion on tribals -in such questions i tried to substantiate my answers with some live eg's (like i have always appreciated the fact that tribal population in jharkhand celebrate 'Sarhul" as well as holi/diwali with equal fervor so there has been beautiful enmeshing of customs and traditions )or relate them with some current issues.Over a period of time if you actually start "living " your optional, it no longer remains a mere study or exam's part. Hope this helps.
Congratulations Harshika. I hope you get Jharkhand Cadre and use your passion for economics and anthropology to uplift the situation of the state. I feel no other combination of optional ( oops...passion) could have prepared you to face the challenges here in this state.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for the wishes.
DeleteMany Congratulation to you.One question,I have opted Anthropology as my optional subject. Is Vaid's IAS Academy notes is good for the preparation? Thanks!
ReplyDeletealka ranjan could you please tell me where i can get anthropology Vaids notes. ankur.ms9@gmail.com. i would be so grateful if u could help me
DeleteThanks Alka for the wishes. Vaid's IAS study materials were okay but in any case they can just supplement the books ...Re-reading the basic textbooks is best way to prepare. All the best for all your endeavors.
ReplyDeleteHi Harshika...
ReplyDeleteI am a law graduate and I was wondering as how to prepare for this subject of anthropology? Can you please tell me the basic study material from where I can start doing the ground work? Also, which coaching centre's notes would you reccomend for starting with preparation and ideally how many months will the subject take eg. its said pali take 3 months, etc.?
Kindly reply.
Thanks
Hello Harsh.. Anthropology is an interesting optional. If you had Biology in your +2 that would be really helpful especially for physical anthro portion. To start off , you can start reading Ember and Ember..As for coaching materials...well frankly i cannot suggest u anything...i feel read the textbooks and u can just supplement them with the coaching materials..as for time taken fr preparing this optional...its very subjective..for me it was relatively new optional..so i had to devote relatively more time...one random read before prelims and intensive study after prelims would be sufficient.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Harshika..
DeleteI would request you to please tell your strategy you followed for General Studies unit wise like polity, then Science n Tech, environment n biodiversity, etc.?
Also would like to know what was your approach for CSAT preparation which book or coaching material you followed and how did you covered current affairs through magazines and Hindu and how did you revised it before exams as in did you made notes from newspaper and magazines while reading or you used to during revision before exam just made some bullet points?
Kindly reply.
Thanks a lot
My bad for asking you unit wise preparation for GS in my earlier post as I just saw it on other section of your blog.
DeleteWell to add on would like to know as you mentioned that you studied Science & Tech from Sriram's notes from where can I buy those and also is it advisable to rely on Vajiram's notes for current affairs & static GS?
Kindly reply.
Many Thanks
Harsh you can get Sriram's study materials from Delhi and as far as Vajiram notes for current affairs and static GS is concerned..you can definitely use them as supplementary read ...but basically emphasise more on core books like NCERTS etc..For CSAT, i revised all the basic maths , DI and reasoning questions from different manuals and online sources...Practice as many questions as you can and pay special emphasis on time management. Also practice some english comprehension questions from different manuals etc..
ReplyDeleteAs far as current affairs from different magazines and newspapers is concerned...i did made some random note of important news article or atleast jotted down 2-3 important points from a particular editorial ...that way i remembered what was the crux of the whole thing was and also saved the time during revision etc...make your newspaper notes etc very readable and easy to remember...say just 2 points as crux of the article is sufficient.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Harshika...your replies gave me great insight as to how to go about preparing...
ReplyDeleteJust one last question that I would like to ask is how did you managed routine/schedule as to cover the syllabus for prelims and mains as it is so vast and i think making time table and devoting 2 hours each for a subject say geo., science, etc. doesn't make it effective. So what strategy you followed as to complete course for prelim plus revision on time and same with mains.
Also, as I am not from delhi so I don't have choice of coaching classes and am planning to self study till prelims and thereafter to attend coaching classes for mains, so what's your take on coaching classes are they essential? From which shop/area in Delhi can I buy Sriram's notes for science and tech
Can you also tell me as it was your second attempt how did you managed your fear, anxiety, pressure, stress, etc with preparation because I hail from family of civil servants so you can understand the indirect expectations and pressure from people around me.
Again thanks a lot for your replies and I wish you a successful bureaucratic career ahead!
Harsh..well time management and routine etc is very very subjective thing...some people make strategy on a daily basis ..others on a weekly basis..as it is GS preparation should be comprehensive I.e both from the point of view of Prelims and Mains..make a schedule...cover portions where ur more uncomfortable like in my case Geography first and follow that with easy or comfortable areas...ensure that if you are studying a particular GS topic or optional chapter you complete it within the time frame set by you and with proper understanding.Roughly keep 2-3 weeks time in hand fr revision or frankly just to browse through topics before exams..I am also not from delhi..i did my preparations from ranchi (for all the 3 stages) ...n coaching centres at best can supplement your efforts nothing much...its your concepts and understanding that matters the most..Well i did got through my first attempt in 2010 AIR 640...however, i was highly dejected and depressed...but thanks to the moral support of my parents i could overcome that fear and made up my mind that i will give my 100% once and then see what happens!!!!just have faith in your abilities, be honest in your effort and be determined..you will definitely succeed..all the best.

ReplyDeleteHi Ma'am ,

Please tell me how to start study about anthropology and which Material and books should I take...
please ma'am aapne jo books prefer kiya tha ..
usko bta dijiye ..mai aapka bahut aabhari rahunga...
because I am telling Truth I really dont know how to start and what to start except ncert books..
Hello Ratnendra..Anthropology is an interesting optional. I have shared the book list and the strategy that i followed..To start off , first go through the syllabus of Anthropology and the last few years question paper to have a rough idea as to what this optional demands...then start reading basic book like Ember and Ember and some physical anthropology book like P.Nath...first read randomly and slowly you will develop interest in it. I would also add that if you have studied biology say even till 12th then that is really beneficial in physical anthropology portion.Hope this helps.
DeleteHi Harshika ,
ReplyDeleteCould you please suggest the resources on tribes and other misc stuff in which NAdeem Hasnani is missing in paper-2 .. I dont have any other book/material except Nadeem Hasnain for 2nd paper :9. I could not get Indian Anthro by Vijoy Sahay from the market ...Any idea on the same? .
Hi Julian...There are two books by Nadeem Hasnain..One is Tribal India and other is Indian Anthropology..also for the tribe posrtion you can use internet (in case if you are not getting any of these books).
Deletehi harshika,
ReplyDeletecould please list specific websites you used to supplement your answers in anthropology?
Which source did you refer to the topics not covered in Gaya/pandey?(esp.neo evolutionism to post modernism)
hello Harsha...By websites i mean site like that of survival international, Ministry of tribal affairs etc.For topics not covered in Gaya pandey sir's book, i referred to the random Google search..There are ample anthropology study materials on net...you can use them.
ReplyDeletehello mam congratulations on your grand success.
ReplyDeletemam im really confused btw anthropology and pub. ad. which one to take as optional i have maths background my 1st optional is geography.i studied biolgy since tenth standard. Is anthro is tough and bigger syllabus or opinion based.please help.
Hello Akash. Thanks for the wishes. Well frankly choice of optionals depends basically on what interests you more. Both Pub Ad and Anthopology are interesting optionals. If you have Biology in +2 it does help in anthroplogy especially physical anthropology. Anthropology has several parts like Physical, social, cultural etc...so its mix of both theory and application...i would suggest go through the syllabus of both the optionals and last few years question and do a genuine self analysis as to with which optional you are comfortable with. Its essentially your interest that matters.all the best fr all your endeavors.
Deletethank you mam for your encouraging words.
Deletekeep guiding us looking forward to read some more post on this blog.God bless you.

ReplyDeleteHello Ram
DeleteWith your background , Anthropolgy as optional would be a ncie choice. Frankly, it would be difficult for me to pinpoint exactly which section/book chapter covered which part of syllabus..in stead i felt, it is better if you yourself do this ..see there will be two benefits..first when we browse through books for searching the topics..in the process we indirectly get familiar with topics and book..and secondly, most of the topics would be in a chapter or two in a book say but then there are some topics that will also need you to do random internet searches as everything is not there in textbooks...Enjoy reading the Anthro textbooks and i am sure you will relish it.In case if you are stuck with some specific topic do let me know and i would be happy to help you with that..all the best for all your endeavours.
regards

Deletemadam , iam from bangalore and i dont think have resources to go to delhi and take coaching for anthro.. keepin u as my role model n by grace of God iam starting my preparation.. i want to ask u whether is it too much of science technicality involved in anthro.. i know interests matter but no subject is 100% interesting(i may be wrong) and the books u have suggested should it be done cover to cover..? as prima facie the syllabus looks a little long
ReplyDeleteHi..There is absolutely no need of coaching per se. If you read the books nicely and is thorough with concepts that's enough. ANthropology do have bit of technical aspects(physical anthro portion)...but i still feel interest matters a lot..Some books will ahve to be read cover to cover while others would have just few chapters to be read.
DeleteAll the best.
Hi Harshika,
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your success.
Should this P.Nath be read cover to cover? Seems a lot bulky and prolix. Topics as are as per syllabus, but??
Thanks for the wishes.I did read P.Nath cover to cover.
DeleteHello Harshika ma'am,
DeleteCan you suggest some notes/coaching for anthropology..
I have studied philosophy for mains but not satisified with the amount of resources philosophy had.. It is heavily coaching dependent and I feel i have not done enough justice especially contemporary philosophy.. So I am not very confident with 6 chapters out of 20 in paper 1.. for paper 2 i am comfortable with all the topics. Thus, i want to change my subject because I feel there should be something better (esp. because I want to give my best in UPSC!) Does anthropology have any such areas where adequate justice cannot be done..?
I want your honest feedback, if there is any lack of resources in anthropology..
Please recommend some good institutes if they can (really!) help me..
I dont have bio back ground.. should I go thru some concepts in those books?
Awaiting your reply...
I know these are lot of questions.. please try your best to address them. Thnks.. :)

However, my medium being Hindi, I am not sure of I will get sufficient material for preparation in Hindo. Can u please clearify if enough material is available in Hindi. And which notes/books are available in Hindi as well?

ReplyDeletehi harshika
ReplyDeletecongratulations on your success.
please go through my post and need ur valuable suggestion.
didnt clear 2012 prelims and preparing for 2014 attempt.
i am in dilemma of choosing optional because i prepared few chapters in both optionals.
my analysis was:
PUB AD
SYLLABUS : 26chapters,easy to complete
QUESTIONS : vague, taking time in thinking
every question
ANSWERS: subjective, dont know whether to the point,
they are correct from examiners point of view
ANTHRO
SYLLABUS:arnd 50 chapters,vast
QUESTIONS :direct and straight
ANSWERS :not subjective
after going thru 2012 paper i find pub ab bit difficult and anthro
comparitively easy but i never touched primates, genetics and paper 2.
hope u got my situation.awaiting ur reply
thank you

ReplyDeleteI am an B.Tech student and wish to appear for UPSC in 2015. I had zeroed upon PA as my optional when my friend suggested me to find out a bit about anthro. I haven't touched Bio after 10th, would you suggest me to go ahead with the sub? Is it true that chances are better as no of aspirants opting this sub as optional is less?
Regards.
